The Lower Niagara River Region is historically significant for many reasons but primarily for:

  • Its geography and its relation to Niagara Falls in the early commercial development of the Great Lakes Region,
  • Its role in the War of 1812 and the French and Indian War
  • Its position as the last stop on the Underground Railroad for escaping slaves seeking freedom in nearby Canada.

For more on the Underground Railroad visit: www.motherlandconnextions.com and www.niagara.edu/cam/ugrr/index.htm

Our history is interpreted through Old Fort Niagara and through our historical museums and also in more unconventional methods such as our Haunted History Ghost Walks and Marble Orchard Cemetery “Plots”. On special occasions, you may even have the opportunity to meet up with one of Lewiston's historic characters who are always more than happy to “dish the dirt” with some good gossip from a century ago. www.artcouncil.org
