Whether you spend an hour, a day or a lifetime, Lewiston is
an unforgettable gem. Located just ten minutes north of Niagara
Falls, Lewiston rests along the banks of the majestic Niagara
River. It is known for its unique festivals, rich history, quaint
charm and outstanding fishing. Named after New York State Governor
Morgan Lewis, Lewiston was the hub of commerce for east-west
shipping until the Erie Canal was developed. Here, the cocktail
was invented. Many famous Americans have honored us with their
presence including President McKinley who in fact, stayed overnight
in Lewiston the evening before he was assassinated. President
Jimmy Carter deemed our village as “the most historic
square mile in America”. |

| Hamlet of Sanborn |
|
 |
 |
The hamlet of Sanborn is located in the southeastern corner
of the Town of Lewiston on the CSX Railroad Line. The Sanborn
area covers 10 square miles and is home to Niagara County Community
College. This community, rich in history, was formally engaged
in agricultural but now has many retirees and is considered
a bedroom community for those who work in nearby cities. On
February 12, 1864, the newly formed New York Central Railroad
named their stop after the Rev. Ebenezer C. Sanborn, a Methodist
minister, who arrived in 1846. Its historic legacy is reflected
in the antique stores and co-ops located in the hamlet and in
its Historical Society and Museum. A Farm Museum is on the drawing
board which will preserve, interpret and promote the heritage
of rural Niagara County for residents and visitors alike. |
